Free Wi-Fi connection now available at FamilyMart stores nationwide

May 29, 2013
FamilyMart and NTT DATA launched a free Wi-Fi internet connection service in stores on the 28th of this month. The service is available at approximately 8,000 FamilyMart stores nationwide, with some exceptions. The service utilizes the network technology of NTT DATA, which fully develops FamilyMart's store network.

The service provides free internet access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in FamilyMart stores. Anyone can access the internet 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Simply open a web browser on a smartphone or tablet in the store, register, enter your email address, password, and gender, and you're ready to go. However, free internet access is limited to three 20-minute sessions per day per user. The Wi-Fi standard is IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n.

Similar public wireless LAN services were launched by Seven-Eleven in December 2011 and Lawson in April 2012. Seven-Eleven's "Seven Spot" is unique in that it can be used at many Seven & i Group stores, including Ito-Yokado and Denny's, in addition to Seven-Eleven. Lawson's "LAWSON Wi-Fi" is a service exclusive to members of the "Ponta" common point card, but there is no limit on usage time.

FamilyMart's service does not have any notable points of differentiation, but as the number of users increases, it is likely to develop O2O aspects that make use of the content it possesses. In addition, the company is considering making free internet connection available to non-registered users in the event of a large-scale disaster. It is also expected to play a role as social infrastructure.
