Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's solo exhibition "Erotic Women (Real)" will be held at Taka Ishii Gallery from the 25th to June 22nd.
This exhibition marks Taka Ishii Gallery's 20th solo exhibition. The exhibition features a newly selected 50 photographs, based on the premise that Araki himself is erotic and realistic. He pursues a more realistic eroticism than the simplistic expression of gravure photography.
Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Minowa, Tokyo in 1940. After graduating from the Department of Photographic and Printing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University, he joined Dentsu. He went freelance in 1972. Araki's photographs are centered around the themes of Eros (life) and Thanatos (death), or "erotos" for short. He expresses life and death through symbolic motifs such as nudes in bondage and rotting flowers. His work is characterized by vibrant colors and textures. While his work may at first glance appear erotic and grotesque, he is also renowned for his snapshots of everyday people. He was in charge of shooting the first lookbook for the collaboration line between "Y's Red Label," a separate line from the former Y's brand created by designer Michiko Suzuki, and "Yoshiko Creation Paris."
