The exhibition "Monuments of Traffic" by German artist Thomas Bayrle, known as a pioneer of media art and pop art in the 1960s, is currently running at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Omotesando, Tokyo. It runs until September 1st. Bayrle himself curated the exhibition. The minimalist space is filled with works that humorously portray serious themes such as the destruction of nature and accidents caused by increased traffic. Installed in the center of the exhibition is a new work, "Conducteur," created specifically for this exhibition. Made from Audi windshield wipers, it plays a sound collage based on Erik Satie's "Furniture Music." The video work "Sunbeam" was also created in 1994 in collaboration with his son. Also on display is "Carmageddon," a work created using one-third of a disassembled giant wall piece that was shown at last year's international contemporary art exhibition, Documenta (2013).

Beijrle was born in Berlin in 1937 and is based in Frankfurt. After working as a weaver, he taught at the Frankfurt Schudel School of Art for over 30 years. Since the 1960s, he has produced a wide range of works, including objects, graphics, collages, films, and sound installations. A large-scale retrospective of his work is currently being held at the Wheels Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels, Belgium, and is scheduled to be held at the Donnaregina Museum of Contemporary Art in Naples, Italy.
