Hiromi Iuchi, an artist who is spreading her message from Kagawa to the world, holds a solo exhibition at Isetan Girl

May 28, 2013

Takamatsu-based artist Hiromi Iuchi's installation "Natsu no Tobira" (Summer Door) opened on the 24th at the Isetan Girl Gallery on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku store. It runs until June 25th. The exhibition features new works, including paintings inspired by the nature of her hometown, Kagawa; her life's work, the "Coloring Project," silkscreen prints of outline portraits; and her diary-like "Daily Drawing" series. Also on display are T-shirts and tapestries created in collaboration with Tomoyuki Uchida, designer of Quarc Beaurais, who worked as a patternmaker for Rei Kawakubo's COMME des GARÇONS for five years. T-shirts featuring Iuchi's new work, "Fantastical Explosion," will be available for pre-sale at Isetan. This will be Iuchi's first solo exhibition in about five years, since her last in 2008. Over the past few years, she has devoted herself to creative work, building up a collection of artworks, as she explores her own style. "Until now, I've painted heavy themes, but this year, I felt a desire to paint 'light,' and my mood has shifted to a more positive direction. In the art field, concepts are important, and playfulness can be easily forgotten. However, this time, by fusing my passion for fashion, I was able to fully utilize my playfulness and enjoy creating," she says. Maki Taguchi, who produced the installation, also praised her work, saying, "She has a clear concept, a minimalist, repetitive style, yet an artist with an emotional, dynamic, and contradictory appeal. The color tones, influenced by fashion, are wonderful." Iuchi was born in Kagawa Prefecture in 1981. While she primarily paints, her diverse activities also include sculpture, performance, and collaborations with fashion designers. She has exhibited her work in cities around the world, including New York, Paris, and Shanghai. He currently lives and works in his hometown of Kagawa, and is scheduled to exhibit at the Willem Baars Projects gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in September.
