May 24, 2013

The dates for the Yokohama Triennale 2014, an international contemporary art exhibition directed by Yasumasa Morimura, have been announced. It will run from August 1 to November 3 of next year. The main venues will be the Yokohama Museum of Art and Shinko Pier.
The title and concept of the exhibition were also announced at a press conference on May 21. The title is "The Art of Fahrenheit 451: At the Center of the World Is an Ocean of Oblivion," a reference to Ray Bradbury's science fiction novel "Fahrenheit 451," which depicts a world where reading and owning books are forbidden. The concept is also based on the book's theme of "oblivion." Participating artists are yet to be selected.
The Yokohama Triennale is held in Yokohama every three years. The first exhibition was held in 2001, and 2014 will be the fifth. In addition to exhibiting works by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, the exhibition is also known for its proactive introduction of emerging artists; the last exhibition, held in 2011, saw the participation of 77 groups, with a total attendance of approximately 330,000 people.

Morimura was born in Osaka in 1951. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Kyoto City University of Arts, completing his postgraduate studies. Since exhibiting a self-portrait in 1985 in which he dressed up as Van Gogh's self-portrait, he has consistently created photographs and videos based on the theme of "self-portraits," in which he dresses up as famous paintings from art history, former film actresses, and 20th century figures.
