The "Open Space 2013" media art exhibition will open on the 25th at the InterCommunication Center (ICC) on the 4th floor of Tokyo Opera City in Hatsudai. It will run until March 2nd of next year. Admission is free.
The exhibition features representative media art works from the 1990s by artists such as Kazuhiko Hachiya and Hideki Nakazawa, works using cutting-edge technology, and ongoing projects at research institutions. Plaplax, ucnv, Ei Wada, and Akio Suzuki of evala+ will be showcasing new works. Waseda University's Bioaesthetics Platform, the "Bioaesthetics Open Lab," will change its exhibits four times during the exhibition. The "Emergencies!" corner, which highlights emerging creators, will feature Hiroto Ikeuchi's "Realizing Fantasy with Plastic Models," the first of this year's exhibits.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be artist talks, symposiums, workshops, and guided tours of the artworks. On the first day, there will be a talk event featuring Nova Jiang, an artist who creates interactive works, and Hideki Nakazawa, a former physician and visual artist. On the 26th, there will be a performance by Open Reel Ensemble, who appeared at the Issey Miyake 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection show.
The ICC is a cultural facility operated by NTT East Japan. It primarily exhibits virtual reality and media art. In addition to the 10-month Open Space Exhibition, it also hosts special exhibitions. This September, there will be an exhibition by Rhizomatiks, the stage director for Perfume. The 2010 and 2011 exhibitions featured a sound installation by musician Keiichiro Shibuya and evala that led to the Hatsune Miku Opera.
