The Mikimoto Ginza 4-chome flagship store (4-5-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), which is currently undergoing reconstruction, will finally hold its grand opening on June 1st.
Since opening its store in Ginza in 1899, Mikimoto has grown into one of Japan's leading jewelers. Due to reconstruction work that began on January 15, 2015, the flagship store has now moved to Ginza 2-chome (2-4-12 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), where it is currently operating. The flagship store, which will have its grand opening in its original base in Ginza 4-Chome, will be reborn as a relaxed, calm, and luxurious space based on the concept of "nature," the same place that nurtures pearls, the store's origins.
With 12 floors above ground and 2 below, the store has a floor space of approximately 4,600 square meters, nearly double its previous size. The store features a large show window facing Chuo-dori Avenue, and the first to third floors are designed to encourage customers to go up to the higher floors, creating a space where customers can wander around and enjoy the jewelry. The fourth to sixth floors will be specialty floors specializing in pearl necklaces, high jewelry, and bridal items, respectively, providing seated spaces where customers can leisurely choose jewelry. There will also be a multi-purpose hall on the seventh floor.
The facade design, which uses approximately 40,000 glass pieces, was created by Hiroshi Naito, an architect active both in Japan and abroad. Naito said, "I wanted to create a facade that is unlike anything else in Ginza, or anywhere in the world, that no one has ever seen before. What I wanted to express was the 'brilliance of the sea in spring.'" "I would like to create a stunning façade that embodies the dignity, poise and nobility that characterize the MIKIMOTO brand image, but is also overwhelmingly beautiful and will captivate passersby."
