On November 15th, a jumbo Christmas tree lighting ceremony was held in front of the MIKIMOTO flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo. This year marks the 37th tree, which has been illuminating Ginza's winters since 1976. However, due to the flagship store's reconstruction, which began on January 15th, 2015, this will be its final display. The tree, approximately 10 meters tall and 30 to 40 years old, was transported from Hokkaido with its roots still attached. Pearl necklace-shaped objects decorate the base and the wall of the flagship store. The opening ceremony kicked off with a performance of "Sledding" by violinist Naoto. Their spectacular performance, featuring steps and occasional jumps, drew thunderous applause from the audience. Eight children from five countries, including South Africa and Switzerland, were chosen to light the tree. Holding hands, the children touched the light switch, and the tree lit up with the sound of bells. The audience was in awe as 6,500 original multi-colored LEDs shone in seven color gradations and Christmas colors, eliciting exclamations of "beautiful" from many.
The tree will delight the eyes with its light displays, accompanied by the melody of "White Christmas" that plays every hour on the hour from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day leading up to Christmas. After the display, as in previous years, the tree will be donated as a Christmas gift from Mikimoto to public facilities such as schools and welfare facilities near Tokyo.
