The new Ginza store opened in the year of Prada's 100th anniversary.

Oct 17, 2013

Prada opened two large flagship stores in quick succession: Osaka in July and Kobe in September. The long-standing Prada Ginza store on 6-chome has relocated to 5-chome (5-8-17 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), just a few hundred meters away, with a new concept.

The store design was created by architect Roberto Paciocchi, who also worked on Prada and Miu Miu stores outside of the Epicenter. The facade features gold-colored aluminum and polished steel backlit panels, creating a kinetic visual effect. The design is said to be inspired by Carlos Cruz-Diez, a leading figure in kinetic art (moving art) and a great admirer of Prada.

Entering the store, the first floor, where women's and men's leather goods are stocked, is covered in checkered marble; the second floor, where the women's collection, shoes, and accessories are housed, is carpeted; and the third floor, where men's, is floored in ebony parquet. The use of different materials for the floors creates a distinctive look.

To commemorate the opening of the Ginza store, Prada is pre-selling a two-tone tote bag (208,950 yen) made from Prada's iconic Saffiano leather. It comes with a shoulder strap and an interior pocket. Available colors are blue and light gray, light gray and white, and pink beige and white.

While the store design has been slightly modified to take advantage of the city's characteristics, it is fundamentally based on the original store in Milan. A new remodeling project is being planned and steadily implemented at the original store in Milan.

Miuccia Prada's grandfather, Mario Prada, opened the first Prada store in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in the heart of Milan in 1913. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the company's founding. To mark this milestone, Prada was commissioned by the City of Milan to begin a renovation project of the store, including the historic Galleria building.

As the first step in the project, a new store for the men's collection opened on July 20th. The contrast between the classic wooden display shelves and the modern checkered floor exudes the elegance and refinement nurtured by Prada's tradition and innovation. In the future, the store will house a restaurant on the mezzanine floor and an art space managed by the Prada Foundation on the floor above. The store will also house the Prada Group headquarters and will become a new cultural hub for the city of Milan.
