SICF14 Grand Prize Winner Yurina Shiomi's Solo Exhibition to be Held at Spiral

Oct 25, 2013

Yurina Shiomi, winner of the Grand Prize at the art festival "SICF14 (Spiral Independent Creators Festival 14)" held in May this year, is holding her first solo exhibition in Tokyo, "2780," at the Aoyama Showcase in Tokyo, from the 25th to the 27th.
Shiomi was born in Nara Prefecture in 1987. She completed her master's program at the Kyoto Graduate School of Art and Design in 2012. That same year, she won the Excellence Award at the "ULTRA AWARD 2012," and in 2013, she won the Grand Prize in the selection category at the "Kyoto Prefectural Fine Arts and Crafts New Artists Exhibition 2013/Kyoto Art Biennale." The title of this solo exhibition, "2780," refers to Shiomi's own birth weight, and the exhibition features new works inspired by the weight of a fetus.
At "SICF14," Shiomi exhibited "Hanging Billy," a work inspired by Billy Milligan, a man with multiple personality disorder. Twenty-four hands are suspended by a single chain, and when the zipper at the front is closed, the inside becomes pitch black. By entering, one can sense Billy's loneliness, trapped within his multiple personalities.

Spiral Chief Curator Tsutomu Okada commented on her work, "The concept of the interaction that guides people inside is clear. I also saw potential in her free-thinking and eagerness to create new value."

SICF was launched in 2000 with the aim of discovering and supporting creators who will lead the times. 100 creators from various genres are selected and exhibited at Spiral Hall every year during Golden Week.
