On October 25th, WORLD opened the first Asian street-level flagship store for Free People, a brand developed by Urban Outfitters of the US, in Harajuku, Tokyo (6-16-23 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo). The brand also opened a showroom adjacent to the store.
The store has a 265-square-meter sales floor on the first floor and a 182-square-meter event space on the second floor. WORLD began exclusively selling the brand's collection in Spring/Summer 2013, and has since opened pop-up stores in department stores such as Tokyu Shibuya and Isetan Shinjuku, as well as in other company stores such as Opaque. A 70-square-meter store has now opened on the first floor of Lumine Est Shinjuku.
The Harajuku store, located a short distance from Meiji Dori, features a minimalist, woody exterior painted in a natural white, in keeping with the brand's image in its home country. The interior design is based on the concept of a newly opened store run by a creative couple. He has a masculine feel with the fixtures, while she offers a feminine touch with her own artwork.
The quilted patchwork around the pillars and the wooden fixtures are all handmade in India. The walls are decorated with a story wall featuring mementos from the couple's travels. A collage of various items, including beaded children's ethnic clothing and postcards, features a crown on the wall that was originally displayed at the first Free People store in Paramus, New Jersey, which opened in 2002. The brand logo on the wall is also displayed with nail art made from nails and thread, truss beams hanging from the ceiling, and paper flowers hanging from the ceiling, further highlighting the brand's distinctive style.
The products are divided into zones such as jackets, dresses, intimates, and shoes, with a focus on bohemian casual wear. There is also a henna tattoo corner on the second floor, where events are held. Workshops are also planned.
