"Architects Who Didn't Become Architects," an exhibition planned and supervised by Seiichi Saito, president of Rhizomatiks, a creative collective involved in numerous art projects, will open on the 23rd. The exhibition will be held at EYE OF GYRE, an art space within the Omotesando GYRE building, and will run until November 4th. The exhibition features installations using Rhizomatiks' projection mapping and match-move techniques, as well as interviews with architects active in various fields, talk shows, and video exhibits. In search of new forms of architecture, these creators—"architects who quit architecture"—aspired to become architects and studied architecture at university or graduate school, but decided not to pursue that path. They express their ideas using technology and art. The exhibition aims to explore why these creators chose a different form of expression than architecture and how architectural thinking and education influenced them.
In addition, by introducing technology that creates "virtual worlds," which are constantly evolving but have yet to be recognized in the architectural world, the exhibition will propose expanding the scope of "architecture."
Main exhibition themes include "FUELFEST," an event held by Nike London at a former power station in London; "FULL CONTROL YOUR CITY," an au by KDDI commercial that depicts how Tokyo can be controlled with just a cell phone; and "FULL CONTROL TOKYO," a project mapping event held at Zojoji Temple two months after the commercial aired and featuring Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
Participants include Yugo Nakamura, active in the fields of web design and video direction; Akio Iida, known as an art buyer and producer; and Ryosuke Takei, who pursues communication through bicycles.
