hpgrp Gallery Featuring Portland and Tokyo Artists

Apr 1, 2014

A collaborative exhibition between Portland, Oregon artist AJ Fosik and 12 Tokyo-based artists will be held at hpgrp Gallery Tokyo in Omotesando, Tokyo, from April 18th.

The exhibition involves 12 Tokyo-based artists who have individually customized unpainted, disassembled pieces sent by Fosik, completing them into sculptures. Participating artists include Ryuichi Ogino, Imaone, Hiro Kurata, Yoshi47, Usugrow, Shohei, Tadaomi Shibuya, Madsaki, Nigamushi, Kaz, Mhak, and Koichiro Takagi. Fossick will also be visiting Japan to coincide with the collaborative exhibition, where an open-to-all reception party will be held at 7:00 PM on the first day.

AJ Fossick grew up in the industrial area of Detroit, Michigan, and moved to New York in the late 1990s to attend Parsons School of Art, where he formed the Rot Gut Collective. He gained attention in the street art scene, but then turned his attention to woodworking, which he learned while making signs. Using a saw and found wood, he cuts thousands of tiny pieces to create intricate, sinister-looking beasts. Since 2005, he has traveled across the Americas, holding successful solo exhibitions not only across the US but also in Berlin, Sao Paulo, London, and Milan. He has also collaborated with companies such as Samsung USA and Warner Bros.
