Ginza Mitsukoshi is introducing souvenirs for people returning home and tourists from Japan and abroad ahead of Golden Week. The sale runs until May 6th. Ginza is home to famous domestic and international brand stores, long-established Japanese and Western confectionery shops, and theaters, and is visited by many people returning home and tourists from Japan and abroad during Golden Week. According to a Ginza Mitsukoshi representative, purchases by foreign tourists in April 2014 increased 180% compared to the previous year, and demand for souvenirs from foreign customers is expected. Anticipating demand for souvenirs from such customers, the store is offering a selection of Japanese and Western confectionery and miscellaneous goods exclusive to the store. Akasaka Kakiyama's Kabuki-patterned Pochi Okaki (24 pieces for 2,500 yen) are Akasaka Kakiyama rice crackers packaged in a kabuki-themed washi paper envelope. The Kabukiza Theater, located in front of Higashi-Ginza Station, is celebrating its first anniversary since reopening. Ginza Furuya's Danhachi Assortment (1,200 yen) is a Ginza Mitsukoshi original product, made by wrapping gyuhi (glutinous rice cake) in dorayaki skin and coating it with yokan (sweet bean paste). It comes in three flavors: ginger, sesame, and seasonal. The chewy texture of the gyuhi and the yokan create a harmonious combination. Dessert Thé Cake Canelé (1,100 yen) is a moist, canelé-shaped cake made with rice flour from Kumamoto Prefecture, and is popular with female customers. Dessert Thé is a Ginza Mitsukoshi original sweets brand that offers original sweets to pair with tea. In addition to food, there are also items unique to Ginza. The Rusac Adam handbag (18,000 yen) is based on the traditional kabuki curtain colors (black, persimmon, and light green). The boxy silhouette matches well with traditional Japanese clothing.
Contemporary artist Yamaguchi Kosaku's "New Tokyo: Famous Places on the Tokaido Road, Nihonbashi Revised" (limited to one piece, priced at 250,000 yen) is a "modern ukiyo-e" depicting Nihonbashi. The arched Nihonbashi Bridge spans the Metropolitan Expressway, and fish sellers can be seen between the buildings, reminiscent of the area's prosperity as a fish market during the Edo period. The store's 8th floor gallery is hosting the "Japanese Avant-grande NEO-UKIYOE Exhibition" until the 29th.
