Daichi Ehara of Nyte has been selected as a recipient of the "Istitute Marangoni Scholarship - Supported by THE FASHION POST, Tokyo," a project to support young designers organized by Istituto Marangoni, a fashion school in Milan, THE FASHION POST, and the Japan Fashion Week Organization. Ehara, who has a background as a Kabuki actor, founded Night in 2006 and changed the brand name to Nyte for the Spring/Summer 2009 collection, which saw the brand's full-scale launch. Based on Japonism, the brand's contemporary sensibilities and craftsmanship have earned it praise as "a brand that embodies Tokyo-style elegance." The brand's distinctive collections include "separate," which combines a skirt and top made of the same material and details, and the "kimono" line, which is inspired by traditional Japanese clothing.
The selected designer will be given the opportunity to participate in a special one-month program at Instituto Marangoni, which has produced numerous designers since its founding in 1935, including Francisco Moschino, Alessandra Facchinetti, and Umit Benan. They can choose one of the three cities where the institute has branches: Milan, London, or Paris, and all airfare, accommodation, and course fees will be waived.
The award was launched in March, recognizing that compared to the high level of design produced by Japanese designers, there are many challenges in terms of business and approaches to expressing their work.
