Miuccia Prada, designer of Prada, was selected as the recipient of the International Designer of the Year award at the 2013 British Fashion Awards, held at the London Coliseum on December 2nd.
At the awards ceremony, 16 awards were presented to people in the fashion industry who were recognized for their creative talent and outstanding design, as voted for by over 300 fashion industry professionals. Burberry won both the Designer Brand of the Year and Menswear Designer of the Year awards. In addition, Edie Campbell, who has modeled for numerous brands including Marc Jacobs and Lanvin, was named Model of the Year. Guests included First Lady Samantha Cameron, designer Donatella Versace, Kate Moss, One Direction's Harry Styles, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sienna Miller, who honored the fashion industry's greatest successes of the past year. Hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall, the event was attended by retailers, models, celebrities, media, and, for the first time, ticketed members of the public. The British Fashion Awards began in 1984 as "Designer of the Year," with Katharine Hamnett winning the award. Following its success, the awards expanded in 1989, and Princess Diana also attended in 1990. Starting this year, the International Designer of the Year Award has been newly established to recognize designers who are active internationally.
