The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in Takebashi, Tokyo, will be hosting the architecture exhibition "Japanese Houses: Architecture and Lifestyles Since 1945" from July 19 to October 29. The exhibition, which first opened at the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome in 2016 and then at the Barbican Centre in London in March 2017, showcases 75 residential buildings by 56 leading Japanese architects and their architectural groups, including Jun Aoki, Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Kengo Kuma, Kumiko Inui, Kazunari Sakamoto, Kazuo Shinohara, Kenzo Tange, Kazuyo Sejima, Itsuko Hasegawa, Sou Fujimoto, Terunobu Fujimori, Kunio Maekawa, Riken Yamamoto, and Antonin Raymond, through over 400 models, blueprints, photographs, and videos. The exhibition also focuses on the postwar period, when building conditions changed dramatically, and deliberately presents the works in 13 themes, such as "Prototypes and Mass Production," "Concrete on the Earth," and "The Nature of the Family," rather than in chronological order. The house can be viewed from various angles, including its time period, social context, location, and human connections. Furthermore, inside the building, a life-size model of the "Assistant Professor Saito House" (Seike Kiyoshi, 1952), which is said to be one of the masterpieces of Japanese residential architecture and no longer exists, is reproduced with its original furniture. This large-scale exhibition will deepen your understanding of Japanese residential architecture.
