CTRLZAK, a design studio founded by Italian artists and designers Katia Meneghini and Thanos Zakopoulos, is currently experiencing a boom with their "Hybrid" collection, a collaboration between the studio and interior goods brand Seletti. Their signature dish series, launched in 2011, is a striking collection that combines Chinese and European-inspired ceramics in equal parts. Looking at the dishes, a colored line drawn right down the middle appears to represent a border separating East and West. However, this line actually connects the pieces, strengthening and uniting them—a paradoxical expression. The duo explains that while this project focuses on the present, it also incorporates a touch of irony in the past. Each CTRLZAK project has a story, and their deep research into cultural backgrounds and traditions supports their belief that by continually learning from the past, they can create a hybrid future. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of Katia and Thanos inspire the pieces they create every day.
The "Hybrid" series is actually on sale, allowing you to enjoy Control Zak's work in your everyday life. The collaboration with Seletti is still ongoing as of 2017, and this year's latest release is a rug, which is also worth keeping an eye out for.
