Robert Frank's "cheap, quick, and messy" exhibition catalog printed on newspaper [NADiff Recommended Book]

May 4, 2017

Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is Robert Frank's "Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2016." NADiff BAITEN, the museum shop located within the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu, Tokyo (2nd floor, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Ebisu Garden Place, 1-13-3 Mita, Meguro-ku, Tokyo), introduces the book. ■ "Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2016" by Robert Frank

This book is the exhibition catalog for "Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2016," which is currently touring 50 cities worldwide. The exhibition was held in Japan, the 10th city, at the Chinretsukan Gallery of the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, where it attracted over 10,000 visitors in two weeks. "When Robert Frank heard the idea for this exhibition, he said, 'Cheap, quick, and dirty. That's what I wanted!'" (Robert Frank) "Robert Frank is one of the most iconic photographers of the 20th century. His publication of "Americans," one of the world's most famous photobooks, had a profound impact on the photography and art worlds, and he has continued to pursue his unique style through photographs, video, and text. However, because his original prints require extremely delicate handling, most of them are not currently on public display. Frank, in response, wanted to increase opportunities for younger generations to see his works. It was against this backdrop that "Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2016" was conceived. Organized with the cooperation of Gerhard Steidl, founder of the German publishing house Steidl, this unconventional exhibition featured primarily universities and educational institutions, with photographs printed on inexpensive newspaper being destroyed at the end of the exhibition period through a performance.

This book not only functions as a catalog, but can also be displayed directly on the wall, allowing you to enjoy Frank's photographs in a casual manner, and is filled with his various thoughts.

From April 29th, the Robert Frank documentary film "Don't Blink" will be screened nationwide at Bunkamura Le Cinema and other venues, and a related fair is also being held at the Museum of Photography's store.
