Keiichi Tanaami's "Evening Darkness with Falling Cherry Blossoms" exhibition held at Nanzuka Shibuya

Sep 10, 2014

Keiichi Tanaami, an artist active in a wide range of fields as a graphic designer and illustrator, will be holding a new solo exhibition, "Evening Darkness with Falling Cherry Blossoms," at the gallery "NANZUKA" in Shibuya, Tokyo, from October 25th.

The exhibition will feature new paintings, including the 3-meter-wide masterpiece "Evening Darkness with Falling Cherry Blossoms," as well as large-scale sculptures. The new sculpture is part of a series based on the "Red Arched Bridge" created in 2012, featuring a character aboard an airplane perched on an impassable bridge. Tanaami commented, "My personality allows me to transform even dark past experiences into positive expressions." An opening reception with the artist will be held on October 25th at 6:00 PM. Born in 1936, Tanaami made his debut as a designer while studying at Musashino Art University. While also creating fine art works, he was influenced by psychedelic culture and pop art in the mid-1960s, and was particularly inspired by his encounter with Andy Warhol. In addition to holding solo exhibitions in Berlin and Switzerland, he is scheduled to exhibit in the "International Pop" exhibition, which will tour the United States in 2015. In recent years, he has focused his efforts on canvas, and since 2010 has been working on large-scale paintings that chronicle his own history, creating what could be called "mandalas." He has also released collaborative items with Wacoal, Uniqlo, and other brands.
