A collection of 100 psychedelic "Tanaami T" pieces! Keiichi Tanaami exhibition opens in Daikanyama on the 10th

May 8, 2013

Artist Keiichi Tanaami's exhibition "Tanaami Tee x 100" will be held at Gallery Speak For in Daikanyama, Tokyo, from the 10th.

This exhibition will feature 100 T-shirts, Tanaami's first. Treating the items as canvases, he creates a wearable, vibrantly colorful world, ranging from one-of-a-kind pieces featuring hand-drawn illustrations to elaborate silkscreen and inkjet prints. A special limited edition of his latest drawing collection, "Glamour" (published by ERECT Lab.), titled "Glamour 100 Limited."

Born in 1936, Tanaami is an artist whose work transcends the boundaries of media and genres, working in a wide range of fields, including design, illustration, animation, experimental film, painting, and sculpture. In the 1960s, he was a pioneer of psychedelic art and pop art in Japan, creating album covers for The Monkees and Jefferson Airplane, and in 1975 he became the first art director of the Japanese edition of Playboy magazine. In recent years, he has presented his new works not only at traditional European art fairs but also in Hong Kong and Singapore, and in 2010 a retrospective was held in Shenzhen, China. He has also collaborated with fashion brands such as Lucien Pellat-Finet and Stussy, and in January of this year he released a collaborative series with Wacoal's sportswear brand CW-X, which was exhibited at the company's Spiral Garden in Aoyama.
