A pop-up shop featuring ISSEY MIYAKE's new series, "IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE," featuring the work of graphic designer Ikko Tanaka, is open until the 9th at The Stage on the first floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building. Tanaka was a leading graphic designer until his sudden death in 2002. His work incorporated pre-modern Japanese aesthetics, such as traditional performing arts, Rinpa school art, and ukiyo-e, into Western modern design. This new series was created to express Issey Miyake's gratitude and respect for the many inspirations he received from Tanaka during their close relationship since their first meeting in the 1960s. Three of Tanaka's numerous works were chosen as motifs: "Nihon Buyo," a poster for a Japanese dance performance held at the University of California; "Sharaku 200 Years," a work exhibited at the 200th anniversary exhibition of Toshusai Sharaku's birth; and "Variations of Bold Symbols," a graphic art piece. The pop-up shop will also sell books and products exclusive to Isetan Shinjuku.
