The "Exhibition of Time, Circling Time," which looks at the world through the lens of time, will be held at the Seikatsu Kobo Gallery in Setagaya, Tokyo, from March 5th to 21st.
Until about 140 years ago, in Japan, the passage of days was tracked by the phases of the moon, and the length of each day and each hour varied with the seasonal changes of the sun's rising and setting. However, today, we live our lives according to a single, absolute clock and calendar, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This exhibition will feature works that capture the immeasurable flow of time that flows through the minds and bodies of each individual, and the lives of every plant and animal.
The first part of the exhibition will focus on the various cycles and rhythms that arise from the relationship between Earth and celestial bodies. Models of celestial bodies, the behavior of plants and animals affected by celestial rhythms, and rhythm graphs will be on display, showcasing the activities of living creatures in tune with the rhythms of the stars. The second part of the exhibition offers a glimpse into primitive time intervals through masks and photographs representing the sun and moon, as well as myths about the origins of the sun and moon. It also looks back on the relationship between time and humanity up to the present day by examining sundials from around the world and the mural "Time and Man's History." Other exhibits include advertising posters related to time, time-killing devices from around the world, and footage of the Himba people. This will encourage visitors to consider the representation of time and the power of leisure as it becomes increasingly standardized. The third part of the exhibition will showcase the flow of time in each region, including documentary footage capturing a day in various locations and circular structures engraved with various times around the world. This will allow visitors to experience the feeling that "time flows differently here," which we all experience when traveling. Additionally, the gallery on the third floor of the Seikatsu Kobo will host the "Time Collection Box" exhibition, where visitors can view collected time. This exhibition will explore time as it appears in certain forms and is captured in photographs.
Also, from 2pm to 5pm on March 12th, there will be screenings of films such as "The Great Melt," "The Song of Arayo," and "Iyomante - Bear Sending," which show murres building nests on cliffs during the short Arctic summer, arctic foxes preying on chicks, and polar bears waiting for the day the sea will freeze over. Other events include a storytelling session titled "The Beginning of the World, the Beginning of Time" on March 19th from 1:30pm to 3pm, where Ainu folk tales and Norse mythology will be shared, and a workshop titled "Let's Make a Sundial" on March 20th from 10am to 12:30pm.
