"Sangenjaya Triangle: Modern Studies," an exhibition focusing on the Sangenjaya Triangle in Tokyo, will be held at the Sangenjaya Seikatsu Kobo Gallery from January 30, 2016. The Triangle is an area sandwiched between Setagaya Street and Tamagawa Street (National Route 246). During the Edo period, it flourished as a rest stop for pilgrims to Mt. Oyama. After the war, it became Barag Street and is now a bustling entertainment district with restaurants. This exhibition attempts to survey and document the Triangle, which retains traces of the Showa era. Following the methods of architecture and customs researcher Kon Wajiro, a proponent of modern studies, the exhibition presents illustrations and diagrams depicting the activities of businesses and the people living there. In addition to a map of all the businesses currently located in the Triangle, surveyed for the exhibition, the exhibition will also feature the results of a route survey of people passing through the Triangle and their travel patterns. You can also view surveys of store menus, signs, floor plans, and foot traffic, as well as reports on the Triangle Area by Setagaya-based essayist Shimao Maho and interviews with shopping district residents who are familiar with the Triangle Area's changes.
In addition, a related event will be held from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM on February 6, 2016, titled "Tsuzuki Kyoichi's Field Notes: Recording and Remembering," in which editor Tsuzuki Kyoichi, who has introduced local culture and customs, will talk about the significance of recording and remembering the landscapes and popular culture that are being lost with urbanization and modernization. In addition, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM on February 28, 2016, there will be a "Setagaya Local Walking Guide" event where Shimao Maho and editor Kusanagi Yohei will introduce the "Setagaya Local Way of Walking" as a local way of walking around Setagaya. (Participation fee for both events is 500 yen, limited to the first 60 people)
