A chaotic skate park repurposed from a historic church

Feb 27, 2016

While the word "church" often conjures up images of solemn places, one such place has been transformed into a cultural space where young people can gather. This church, called "KAOS TEMPLE," was completed in northern Spain. The building once had an owner, but was abandoned during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s and fell into ruin. A few years ago, a group of young people called the "Church Brigade" took over the building and renovated it into a skateboarding spot.

When artist Okuda San Miguel visited the site in 2014, he was impressed by this use of the abandoned space and proposed leaving his artwork on the walls. With support from Red Bull and a paint company, he completed a rainbow-colored work evoking KAOS (= CHAOS), covering every wall of the church. Large cranes and heavy machinery were also used to paint the entire ceiling. Construction began on November 23, 2015 and took place over seven days, with the site opening to the public on December 10.

In addition to enjoying skateboarding, Chaos Temple can also host art exhibitions and events. In the future, the site plans to offer a wide range of activities, including skateboarding lessons, art-related workshops and concerts, with the aim of becoming a place where people can meet and communicate. If you have any other ideas, the site welcomes your suggestions and asks that you "please get in touch."
