Jean Paul Gaultier's Gaultier Paris show took place in the brand's headquarters' party room on January 27th. A set resembling the entrance to Le Palace, a club that dominated Paris from the 1980s to the early 1990s, was set up at the front of the runway. '80s pop dance music played in the background as models walked in '80s style. This period setting is a Gaultier specialty. Conical hats reminiscent of Yves Saint-Laurent were paired with dresses evoking Gaultier's birdcage dresses from the '80s and dresses featuring patchwork bikini-like elements, mixing period styles with Gaultier's signature humor. The brand also paid homage to the late David Bowie, drawing cheers as models appeared in '70s Bowie-inspired makeup while his '80s album "Fashion" played.
It was a festival-like show, but each piece was highly polished, and he maintained his eagerness to incorporate new techniques, such as a see-through dress made of silicone lace that gave off an eerie glow, and pants painted with a matte resin motif.
For the finale, a black curtain rose and a mirror ball spun as the models danced enthusiastically, and Gaultier himself appeared, dancing along, to the delight of the audience.
