ASICS unveils official uniforms for the Japanese Olympic team at the Rio Olympics. Cherry blossoms in full bloom on the chest!

May 27, 2016

On May 26, ASICS announced the official sportswear for the Japanese national team at the 31st Summer Olympic Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21, 2016, and the Paralympic Games in September. This marks the first time that the official sportswear for the Japanese Olympic and Paralympic teams will share the same design. While multiple companies have previously sponsored the sporting goods category, providing the official sportswear, shoes, and bags for the Japanese national team, ASICS signed a "Tokyo 2020 Gold Partner" agreement with the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in April of last year, becoming the highest-ranking domestic sponsor in the sporting goods category. ASICS will now be the sole sponsor for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The CONNECT concept is expressed through graphics of repeated movements, incorporated into some of the shirts and pants, while the training jacket worn on the podium features a cherry blossom motif to emphasize its Japanese character. The color palette is primarily red, with both the women's and men's jackets featuring a uniform red and red with white accents. Neon yellow, inspired by the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, is used as an accent color. The "Japan logo" also evokes the image of Japanese precision and accuracy, as well as simple strength. Considering the extreme temperature differences between day and night in Rio de Janeiro, a breathable and lightweight knit is used for the material, while plant-based materials are used for the polo shirts. The emblem is a glossy patch with a three-dimensional effect created by its uneven surface. At the press conference, ASICS President and CEO Motoi Oyama said, "This is the first time we've simultaneously released official sportswear for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We developed this athleisure wear with a distinctly Japanese design, with the hope that it would be comfortable even outside of competition." Saori Yoshida, a female wrestler, commented, "It's comfortable even when you sweat, and the gradation of the zipper is cute." Ryohei Kato, a gymnast, commented, "It's very Japanese. I hope to be able to smile like these cherry blossoms on the podium." Swimmer Tsuki Imai also commented with a smile, "The material is very light and stretchy, so I think I'll be able to relax in the athletes' village." Wheelchair rugby player Daisuke Ikezaki commented, "The zipper is large, so even athletes with hand disabilities can easily open and close it with just one finger. I really appreciate the thoughtful design."

Items available include clothing such as jackets, pants, windbreakers, T-shirts, polo shirts, pants, and shoes, as well as caps, wheeled bags, and backpacks, and some of the items will be released as replicas from July.
