Aug 21, 2015

The fourth installment of the "World Picture Book Artists" series, "ART x Picture Books," is running through September 7th at the Eki Kyoto Museum of Art on the 7th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan. This exhibition follows "The Great Children" in 2003, "Picture Book Artist Wonderland" in 2006, and "Travel to the World of Picture Books" in 2010. The exhibition features original artworks organized under four themes: DETAIL, FANTASY, COLOR, and ANIMAL. The exhibit also features works by four Caldecott Medal winners, known as the "Nobel Prize of picture books," including Chris Van Allsburg, the original author of the Hollywood film "Jumanji," many of whose works have been translated by Haruki Murakami, and Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the "Madeleine" series, which depicts a girl living in a boarding school in Paris, France. Shaun Tan, whose "The Lost Thing," which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, will also be featured.
Original illustrations by Sakai Komako and Naga Shinta will be featured from Japan. Approximately 200 works by 14 artists will be on display, including special exhibits by Maurice Sendak and Kuroi Ken. A book signing session with Kuroi Ken is scheduled for August 22nd and 23rd.
