The "Hirokawa Tamae 'SOMARTA KIMONO COUTURE' Exhibition - Tradition x Innovation in Japanese Clothing for a New Era" by SOMARTA designer Hirokawa Tamae is being held at the KIRIKO LOUNGE on the 6th floor of Tokyu Plaza Ginza until October 18th.
"KIMONO COUTURE," as the title of the exhibition suggests, was started by Hirokawa, who felt a sense of crisis about the gradual decline of Japan's traditional kimono industry, and believed that in order to pass on kimono culture and techniques to the future, it was necessary to evolve traditional kimono designs into forms that fit modern lifestyles. The project involves developing textiles with four companies: Senso, a Kyoto-based yuzen dyeing company with a 460-year history, Okashige, Wakoen, and Nishijin weaver Hosoo. The resulting hybrid yuzen textiles feature machine-printed, hand-painted foil, and embroidered silk jacquard fabric. They also incorporate traditional kata-yuzen dyeing, ombré dyeing, and Nishijin weaving techniques incorporating lacquer, washi paper, and foil. These textiles combine digital technology with traditional artisanal techniques to create a new era of kimono. The exhibition combines the resulting "Kimono Couture" collection with pieces from "Makeup" and "Flower Arrangement," showcasing works themed around the theme of "Kimono Couture and Elegant Beauty." Somarta's work will also be on display. A live photoshoot will be held on October 19th from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. On the day, in addition to Hirokawa, Shiseido's top hair and makeup artist Keira Hirofumi, who is in charge of the hair sculpting for the works on display, and flower arranger and photographer Teshigawara Joichi will be joining them for a live photo shoot, capturing Japanese models wearing KIMONO COUTURE. In addition, a pop-up store exhibiting and selling KIMONO COUTURE works will be open from October 20th to 23rd.
