Tamae Hirokawa of SOMA DESIGNE, a designer at SOMARTA, collaborated with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Yamaha") to design the "Taurs" concept model, based on the "02GEN" design concept for power-assisted wheelchairs. The "02GEN" is the second in the "GEN" design concept series, which is based on Yamaha's 2013 design philosophy of "Refined Dynamism." The concept, "Merge," embodies a wheelchair that is "easy to maneuver, moves gracefully, and complements the user's individuality, making it an appealing vehicle to display." Additionally, the design incorporates functionality and safety considerations while pursuing comfort, focusing on the beauty of the seated posture and the sense of unity between the user and the wheelchair.
The "Taurus" is a concept model that incorporates color, material, and finish suggestions into the "02GEN." Attention to detail has been paid to the seat that wraps around the user's body, with white embossed leather, the frame and wheels finished in a skin-tone ivory, and the casters finished in a matte red gold anodized finish. The goal was to create a wheelchair that goes beyond the concept of a machine and blends with the human body as a "partner."
The "Taurus" will be exhibited at the "Shibuya 2020: Experience the Everyday Life of Ultra-Welfare" exhibition, which will be held from November 12th at the "8/Hachi" gallery on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie. In addition to wheelchairs designed by Hirokawa, the exhibition will also feature models created by in-house designers.
