On November 1st, HOMME PLISSE ISSEY MIYAKE will release a new series, the "HARU Series," focusing on "shunga." Shunga is a genre of ukiyo-e that flourished as entertainment for the common people during the Edo period. While prohibited from being sold openly and considered taboo, the beautiful shunga created by renowned artists such as Hokusai, Utamaro, and Harunobu were recognized for their artistic merit during the Japonisme movement under the leadership of 19th-century European artists. Even today, shunga is being reevaluated, with art museums around the world positioning it as an important section of Japanese art. The British Museum held a "Shunga Exhibition" in 2013, and a traveling exhibition is also being held in Japan. This time, HOMME PLISSE ISSEY MIYAKE has created the "HARU Series," taking shunga as its subject and exploring the raw energy and sophisticated lifestyle exuded by the humor and eroticism of the Edo period. The collection is based on Katsushika Hokusai's "Octopus and the Diver," "Higashi Nishiki," Kitagawa Utamaro's "Utamankura," and Torii Kiyonaga's "Sode no Maki" (Sleeve Scroll). Items include a haori (coat) (100,000 yen) featuring bold shunga prints, a coat (70,000 yen) and blouson (60,000 yen) that can be worn inside out and have shunga prints on the inside and outside, a pressed shirt (24,000 yen) with a striped pattern overlapping a shunga print, a polka-dot pressed shirt (24,000 yen) inspired by the kimono depicted in shunga prints, and a tenugui (hand towel) (3,000 yen) with a bold print of "Sode no Maki" on a pop-colored background.
