The "German Spring Festival" is currently being held at the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse. A beer festival that the whole family can enjoy.

May 2, 2014

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is hosting "YOKOHAMA FRUHLINGS FEST 2014," an event recreating the German spring festival, through May 6th.

The first thing you'll see upon entering the venue is a giant 30-meter-long beer counter visible through the "FRUHLINGS FEST" signboard. This is the second time the event has been held, following last year's announcement, but the counter has undergone a major change from the previous year. Also, following Germany's example as an environmentally advanced country, reusable cups have been introduced, making this an environmentally friendly event.

A large tent behind the counter bar is lined with beer counters, and the venue is packed with long tables and benches. A live German orchestra performs daily on the central stage, and on May 1st, a limited-time dance class was held by the Japan-Germany Society. The venue will offer approximately 70 varieties of German and Kanagawa craft beer. This year, the event will be the first in Japan to offer "Frühlingbock," a specially brewed spring beer. German wines and fruit-flavored cocktails and juices are also available. The food zone offers a wide variety of German-inspired foods. In addition to familiar sausages, there are mussels, Eisbein (cured pork stew), and German-style sandwiches. A special recommendation is the quiche, made with white asparagus, a vegetable beloved in Germany as a sign of the arrival of spring. It's so popular that it often sells out even during the day. Sweet treats like sweet cream cheese pretzels, apricot kuchen, and waffles are also available. To coincide with Golden Week, a children's attraction zone has been set up in an open area facing Yokohama Port, designed to be enjoyable for families. Five play areas, including jumping and aquaboats, are available. Other attractions include a sales zone selling German food and miscellaneous goods, and a workshop corner where you can try making sweets and accessories. There's also a special booth in conjunction with the "Detective Conan 20th Anniversary Conan Exhibition," which is being held on the third floor of Building 1 at the same time, where you can take commemorative photos. "Last year, approximately 460,000 people visited during the event. While the event is weather-dependent, we believe this year's visitor numbers are at roughly the same pace as last year. This time, we've set up an attraction zone, and since it coincides with the Conan exhibition, we expect it to be bustling with families in the latter half of Golden Week," said a spokesperson for the Red Brick Warehouse.
