National Geographic x Kobe Fashion Museum: Looking back at fashion from 100 years ago

May 27, 2014

The Kobe Fashion Museum will hold "World Fashion: Photographs and Costumes from 100 Years Ago" from July 10th to 18th.

This exhibition aims to reexamine fashion from a time before the globalization of clothing due to the spread of Western clothing, when regional and artisanal individuality was evident. The exhibition features approximately 100 precious documentary photographs taken between the 1900s and early 1930s from the vast archives of National Geographic, a visual magazine that has covered the world for over 100 years since its founding in 1888 and is published in 180 countries. Some photographs will not have been published in magazines, and some will be displayed life-size.

In addition, the exhibition will feature contemporary global costume and fashion photographs from the Kobe Fashion Museum's collection. Primarily featuring materials from the Traphagan School of Fashion in New York, the exhibition will showcase costumes worn around the world from the 1890s to the 1940s, as well as dresses created by popular designers of the time.

During the period, talk sessions and lectures with invited guests will be held. In conjunction with the adjacent "Kobe Yukari Museum," a gallery tour led by a curator will also be held.
