On January 15, 2013, a joint press conference for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo, Tokyo Runway, and Art Fair Tokyo was held at the Shiodome Park Hotel Tokyo, where it was announced that the three events would be held simultaneously in March. The Japan Fashion Week Organization aims to promote Tokyo-based creations overseas through the coordination of these events. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO 2013/2014AW will run from March 17 to 23. Approximately 40 Tokyo brands will participate and present their latest collections. The all-night fashion event "VERSUS TOKYO" will be held on the final day, with plans for late-night shows. Art Fair Tokyo 2013, Japan's leading art event, will run from March 22 to 24. Since last year, writtenafterwards has had a collaborative partnership with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. Following on from last year's SOMARTA exhibit, writtenafterwards will now exhibit at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. As the scope of art continues to expand, their work will be exhibited in the new "Tokyo Limited" section, which was established this year to showcase experimental endeavors in fields beyond fine art to fashion, crafts, vintage photography, and more. "I've always been interested in art, and I hoped that expressing fashion in the art world would lead to the creation of something new. Since I won't be showing a collection in Tokyo this season, the exhibits will likely be extensions of works I presented last October and textiles, but I believe that changing the way things are perceived will lead to new creations and new value. It's true that fashion needs to be mass-produced and equates with apparel, but I want to take on a different role," said writtenafterwards' Yoshikazu Yamagata. After the press conference, the brand held an installation showcasing some of the pieces from its Spring/Summer 2013 collection. The pieces will be on display in the Park Hotel Tokyo atrium until March 24th. Takahiro Kaneshima, executive director of Art Fair Tokyo, commented, "We hope that collaborating with other fields, such as fashion, will serve as a starting point for discussions about the future of creativity. Wealthy Asians are interested in fashion as well as fine art. We hope that wealthy Asian visitors will enjoy both fashion and art. We are also considering holding an event that combines fashion and contemporary art." Tokyo Runway 2013 S/S, Asia's largest real-clothes event, will be held on March 20th. Following on from the previous event, mastermind JAPAN will participate in the show, marking the brand's final major show since its hiatus.
Tokyo Runway producer Hirafuji Shinji said, "We were able to have collection brands appear, but after fashion, what we want to show the girls who visit is art. I'm interested to see what kind of reaction we'll get if we create something like a Tokyo Runway Girls Gallery, and I think one of the reasons for the collaboration between the three organizations is to spread the word not only in Japan but throughout Asia."
