It's counting down to the four-day weekend! Have you already made your plans? If you have time, why not check out an exhibition? It features not only art but also cute characters and manga, making it a safe experience even with children. Don't miss the much-talked-about "that exhibit."
■Enter a Dream World with the Moomin Exhibition
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Moomin, the original author, Tove Jansson. Japan's largest exhibition is being held at Matsuya Ginza until May 6th. Exhibits include original drawings being shown in Japan for the first time, a diorama of Moomin Valley by doll artist Chiyo Taniguchi, and exclusive merchandise. Of course, Snufkin, my number one "character I'd most want as a boyfriend," also makes an appearance!
■Watch a Film by an Academy Award-winning Director
Have you seen "12 Years a Slave," which won this year's Academy Award for Best Picture? An exhibition of director and artist Steve McQueen is currently being held at El Pas Louis Vuitton Tokyo. His latest film will also be shown for the first time. Should I see the movie first, or the exhibition first? Maybe it's a good idea to do both.
■Get to know my idol, Robert Capa
Capa is often known as a war photographer, but the Capa exhibition currently being held at the Ebisu Museum of Photography focuses on his works capturing humor and the joy of living. The camera he used until the end is on display, and you can hear his voice through an audio guide, making it seem like you're right next to him.
■Travel back to the Middle Ages with the Nicolas Buffe Exhibition
Nicolas Buffe, known for his collaborations with Comme des Garçons and Hermès, is currently holding an exhibition at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Shinagawa. An installation using AR lets you transform into a knight from the late 15th century! What kind of world will this fusion of past and present create? It's exciting.
■Space Brothers Exhibition Gets Off to a Rocket Start in Nihonbashi
The Space Brothers exhibition, which is touring the country, will begin at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi from May 1st to 6th. The exhibition will feature 200 original drawings being shown for the first time, as well as space suit replicas and rocket models, in cooperation with JAXA. A must-see for manga, film, and anime fans alike.
■Don't miss it! The Andy Warhol Retrospective
Exhibitions run for a long time, so if you don't attend, they'll be over by then. The much talked about Warhol exhibition currently being held at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi will end on May 6th. Be sure to also visit the attached cafe. You'll feel as if you've been transported into the artwork.
You can experience art and culture from around the world without leaving Tokyo. Even if you can't travel far, the exhibition will take you on a spiritual journey!
