"'90s Girls Culture @ TOKYO Kaihoku," an event featuring the girl culture that sparked a major movement in the '90s, will be held at the TOKYO Kaihoku on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building from May 21st to June 3rd.
The '90s was a time when girl culture became a major movement. It was a time when women embraced fashion from labels like "MILKFED.", founded by Sofia Coppola in 1995, and "X-girl," a label founded by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Daisy von Furth that incorporated elements of music and street culture, and immersed themselves in Shibuya-kei music by bands like Pizzicato Five and Kahimi Karie.
This event will feature items reminiscent of the '90s, a time when women began to express themselves, realize their potential, and assert themselves through culture, including fashion, music, film, photography, and art, and when women began to be recognized for their sense of style and lifestyle. Milkfed, a fashion brand representative of the '90s, has collaborated with photographer HIROMIX, who sparked the girly photo boom, to create three types of T-shirts and tote bags specially for this event. X-girl, which launched in 1994 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will be releasing a reissued T-shirt featuring the brand's motif of a woman's face and rainbow logo. Isetan-exclusive items include tote bags (large 5,000 yen, small 3,000 yen), mugs (1,500 yen), and badges (1,300 yen) designed by the duo CIBO MATTO, a female musician active mainly in the US since the '90s. Also available are T-shirts and tote bags with handwritten messages by Kahimi Karie, as well as collaboration items by Kim Gordon and YOSHIMI of Boredoms. On the facade of the venue, a message written by the planner of the project, reflecting on 1990s culture, as well as photographs and illustrations by HIROMIX, will be on display and for sale.
During the event, a DJ event will be held from 6pm on May 23rd by artists participating in the event. Scheduled to perform will be Cibomatto, the unit formed by Honda Yuka and Hatori Miho, who gained popularity in New York in the 1990s as "the most famous girl duo in the world" and released their first original album in 15 years in February this year, and Ohno Yumiko of Buffalo Daughter.
