Rhizomatiks' "brainwave-activated" pure white curtains appear on the lawn square! Enjoy Roppongi's design touch with all five senses again this year

Aug 1, 2016

Tokyo Midtown will be holding its annual autumn large-scale design event, "Tokyo Midtown DESIGN TOUCH 2016," from October 14th to November 6th.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of "Tokyo Midtown DESIGN TOUCH," and various events will be held under the theme of "expanding design." The main event will be "Curtain Wall Theater," the first large-scale installation by Rhizomatiks Architecture, the newly launched architectural division of the creative group Rhizomatiks. This installation offers an unprecedented experience in which space changes with human brainwaves. Participants wear a headset that reads brainwaves in a vast grassy area lined with curtains arranged like a giant white box. It's an experiential outdoor theater where participants can enjoy an interactive experience in which the curtains open and close according to the wearer's brainwaves. The Tokyo Midtown Award, which aims to discover and support the next generation of artists and designers, will feature the announcement of 14 winning works and an awards ceremony starting at 4:30 PM on October 14th at a special venue in front of the "Ishinki" artwork on the Plaza's basement floor. During the event, the award-winning works will be exhibited, as well as works that have been commercialized in the award's design competition. At Midtown Garden, the Japan Graphic Designers Association will host the "Jagda Kasama & Kawara Exhibition," a popular collaboration between Japan's leading designers and local craftsmen. In the lush greenery of the Ogawa area of Midtown Garden, works using the traditional crafts of Yasato tile and Kasama ware will be exhibited. The "Design Book Lounge," featuring a variety of design-related books, will also be available from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on October 15th, 16th, 29th, 30th, and November 3rd, 5th, and 6th. Additionally, the Courtyard will host the fourth annual "Salone in Roppongi" from October 28th to November 6th. Architect Jo Nagasaka, who has long presented his work at the Milan Salone and emphasizes "communicating the complex world of science in a fun and easy-to-understand way through the power of design," will present the world of quantum physics, considered one of the most complex subjects in the world, from a design perspective. During the same period, the Galleria's basement event space will host the "LOHACO Exhibition 2016: Fitting into Your Life." This time, the exhibition will feature 47 products designed for home life by designers from 36 manufacturers. Five popular illustrators will present an interactive video and spatial exhibition, each frame meticulously illustrated under the theme of "illustrating life." Additionally, products will be displayed on an exterior wall designed to resemble a room by Kyo Kobayashi + Mana of the design firm ima, and the space will function as an augmented reality (AR) photo booth, creating a space that will inspire you to take photos and share them with others.
