Experience Japan's three biggest fireworks festivals at Tokyo Midtown's summer event, featuring footbaths, kids' workshops, a park cafe, and more

May 28, 2016

Tokyo Midtown will be holding its annual summer event, "MIDTOWN SUMMER 2016," from July 15th to August 28th.

"MIDTOWN LOVES SUMMER" is based on the theme of "Enjoying the coolness of a Japanese summer with all five senses," and will feature a variety of events that allow you to experience traditional Japanese summertime customs, such as fireworks, footbaths, and wind chimes, in a unique urban style. The "SUMMER LIGHT GARDEN," an illumination display that will light up the summer night sky with colorful light fireworks, was well-received when it was first held last year. This year, the event will feature collaborative programs with three of Japan's biggest fireworks festivals: the Nagaoka Festival Fireworks Display, the National Fireworks Competition (Omagari Fireworks), and the Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition (Tsuchiura Fireworks), which will be held at different times during the event. The Nagaoka Festival Fireworks Display will be held from July 15th to 31st, the National Fireworks Competition from August 1st to 14th, and the Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition from August 15th to 28th. Fireworks are held three times an hour from 6:30 PM to 11 PM. The Wind Chime Festival, now in its fourth year, will also be held this year. Fifteen types of wind chimes made with traditional materials and techniques from all over Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, will be on display in the museum. A wide variety of wind chimes will be on display, from wind chimes made with traditional crafts such as Arita ware and Nambu ironware, which are celebrating their 400th anniversary this year, to wind chimes made from Otaru glass and Toyama brass. BACARDI MIDPARK CAFE, a summer staple at Tokyo Midtown, offers a variety of mojitos, including the "BACARDI Mojito," made with plenty of fresh mint, and the "Bitter Mojito," inspired by the mojito-loving literary legend Hemingway, thanks to the full cooperation of Bacardi, the world's No. 1 premium rum. Limited-time mojitos inspired by Japan's three most famous fireworks locations are also available. The three mojitos available are the "Kagura Nanban (Chili) Mojito" (800 yen), made with "Kagura Nanban," a traditional chili pepper from Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture; the "Akita Melon Mojito" (900 yen), featuring the sweetness of Akita melons with plenty of pulp; and the nutritious "Ibaraki Tomato Mojito" (800 yen), made with Ibaraki's "Ai-chan Tomato." Food options include spare ribs infused with "BACARDI 8," rotisserie fried chicken, and taco rice. Other events include "ASHIMIZU," where you can dip your feet in the stream that flows through Midtown Garden and enjoy the cool evening breeze in the heart of the city, and "Roppongi Uchimizu Operation" on July 22nd. Kids' events include the "Peta Peta Hanabi" stamp rally, which takes you around various points in Tokyo Midtown, and "Let's Create a Japanese Summer Together," a variety of workshops with the theme of "Cooling Down a Japanese Summer," which will change daily from August 11th to 14th. On August 13th and 14th, the "Mid Green Project Morning Glory Sketching Class" will be held in Midtown Garden, where morning glories are in full bloom, allowing parents and children to sketch outdoors. Also running from July 30th to August 31st is "FLOWERS BY NAKED," where you can enjoy the fusion of beautiful flowers and cutting-edge creative art. The event is themed around an "enchanting summer paradise" and is a new, experiential event that will engage all five senses. During the event, a giant tree and waterfall will appear within the venue.
