Dada was born in 1916 at Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Switzerland, as an artistic movement that rejected the art of the time. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Dada's birth, and Dada-related commemorative events are being held in various places, mainly in Switzerland.
At Spiral in Omotesando, Tokyo, a gallery called Gallery Voltaire, named after the Cabaret Voltaire where Dada originated, will be hosting an exhibition and performance showcasing three artists who interpret and express the spirit of Dada in a modern way, as well as a Dada pop-up shop selling related products, from August 4th to August 28th.

In 1916, during World War I, artists gathered in Zurich. Under the name "Dada," a meaningless word, they experimented with various theories that subverted existing forms of art. They embraced the principles of chance and happening, and launched a diverse artistic movement characterized by ephemeral techniques such as performance, poetry, and visual arts, as if to mock the chaotic world in which they lived. When the chaos subsided, they dispersed across the world, along with Dadaism. Their spirit has had a major influence on art since, and is said to continue to be passed down through the generations of contemporary creative expression.
At Gallery Voltaire, which will be held at Spiral, three cutting-edge artists with a diverse range of contemporary expressions - TOLTA, Stillllive with Nigel Rolfe, and Sekikawa Kohei - will look back on the activities of Dada, which had a major impact on the development of 20th century art, and will also implement a program that will make Dada more accessible. MINA-TO on the first floor of Spiral will also have a Dada pop-up shop selling related books, as well as original posters created by Eguchi Hisashi, groovisions, so+ba, Nakamura Tetsuya and others featuring Dada, the Ultraman monster whose name is derived from Dadaism. Details of each event and how to make reservations can be found on Spiral's official website.
