Aug 3, 2016

A photo exhibition featuring renowned French photographer Robert Doisneau, "Robert Doisneau and Portraits of an Era - Joy Remains Forever," will be held at the Bernard Buffet Museum in Shizuoka Prefecture from September 15th to January 17th, 2017. Robert Doisneau is a nationally renowned French photographer known as a "fisherman of images" for his exquisite ability to capture the small dramas of everyday life. His photographs, from the expressive expressions of Parisian lovers and children to humorous and satirical street scenes, are filled with boundless love and curiosity for humanity. Portraits are essential to any discussion of Robert Doisneau. His portraits of artists, backed by his keen insight and keen observation, perfectly embody Robert Doisneau's own joy of seeing. The exhibition features approximately 70 "portraits of the era" from a variety of fields, including painters and sculptors such as Alberto Giacometti and Picasso, as well as designers like Yves Saint Laurent, writers, thinkers, dancers, and art critics. These portraits, some of which have never been exhibited before, explore the cultural background of the time while also showcasing the essence of Robert Doisneau's photographic expression. Also on display are 30 of Robert Doisneau's most important works, carefully selected from the vast collection housed at Atelier Robert Doisneau, founded by his family. The exhibition also features "A Shepherd's Tale," a work that can be considered an homage to Jean Giono, a novelist whom Robert Doisneau admired.
