The exhibition "Contemporary Art in Love" will be held at the Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Karuizawa, Nagano from July 24th to November 23rd.
Love has appeared in ancient literary works, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, said to be the oldest epic poem in human history, and The Tale of Genji, the world's oldest novel, which originated in Japan during the Heian period. Many contemporary artists have also created works that are either themed around love or inspired by it.
This exhibition will focus on the element of love, and will subjectively display works related to or evoking love, drawing inspiration from the broader definition of love, not just "a heartbreakingly deep longing for a loved one," but also "a longing for places or things from the past."
The exhibiting artists include Roy Lichtenstein, known alongside Andy Warhol as a pioneer of American Pop Art, Julian Schnabel, a leading figure in the New Painting movement who has recently become known for his work as a film director, including films such as "Basquiat" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," as well as A.R. Penck, Ushio Shinohara, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Longo, Keiji Usami, Yasumi Hakoshima, and Masato Kobayashi. Why not "fall in love" with the artworks in the forests of Karuizawa and discover just how easy and fascinating contemporary art, which may seem difficult at first glance, can actually be?
