From August 18th to 30th, the "First Encounter with Lacquerware for a Lifetime" Exhibition - Local Crafts Exhibition Vol. 06 "Aizu" will be held at coto mono michi at TOKYO in Aoyama, Tokyo.
This sixth "Local Crafts Exhibition" focuses on Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, a city steeped in history and tradition amidst beautiful seasonal scenery. Aizu lacquerware, produced in this area, is particularly famous among many traditional crafts, and is said to have flourished historically earlier than Wajima lacquerware or Tsugaru lacquerware.
The exhibition will showcase the charm of Aizu, the region where it is produced. Taking advantage of the strengths of Aizu lacquerware, which can be used for a lifetime with easy repairs, a variety of works will be on display, incorporating modern sensibilities. Participating companies include Endo Tadashi Shoten, which revives Aizu's traditional crafts and other items into products suited to modern lifestyles, and Seki Bikodo, which continues to take on new challenges based on the concept of "living and playing with lacquer."
In addition, on August 27th from 1pm to 2:30pm and 3:30pm to 5pm, Aizu artisans will be holding a maki-e workshop using real lacquer. You can apply maki-e to your favorite products and create your own original lacquerware. Each session is limited to 10 people and participation fees start from 3,000 yen.
