To celebrate the re-release of "TRACES OF A DIARY," a documentary film that follows the daily lives of six Japanese photographers on 16mm film, a special screening of a documentary film by two photographers who also appeared in the original will be held at VACANT in Harajuku, Tokyo, on August 15th and 16th.
"TRACES OF A DIARY" is a documentary film by Portuguese artists Andre Principe and Marco Martins that follows the daily lives of six Japanese photographers. Filmed over a period of approximately one and a half years, the film explores the essence of Japanese photographers' image-making processes, storytelling, and diary-style expression. The film captures the photographers' daily lives without a script, incorporating spontaneity. Following the positive reception of a special three-day screening from June 29th to July 1st, this re-release has been decided. To commemorate the re-screening, a special screening of documentaries featuring Nakahira Takuma and Moriyama Daido, who both appear in the film, will be held. Nakahira Takuma led the "season of politics" from the 1960s to the 1970s with his cutting-edge photographs and words, but he fell into a slump as a photographer and fell ill in 1977. The illness caused him to lose most of his memory and his ability to speak, but from then on, taking photographs became his entire life. The documentary being screened this time, "The Man Who Became the Camera - Photographer Nakahira Takuma," follows Nakahira Takuma over the course of three years, following him as he takes daily photographs around his home in Yokohama and as he travels to Okinawa, a place he once visited, as if tracing his lost memories. Meanwhile, Daido Moriyama's "Daido Moriyama: Records | MOVIE IN LONDON" is a documentary that follows the history of Daido Moriyama's legendary personal photo magazine, "Records," through long-term, intimate coverage spanning six months from his exhibition with William Klein held at London's Tate Modern in the fall of 2012. It looks back on the half-century that Daido Moriyama has traveled through footage of his snapshots on the streets of London, his dramatic encounter with William Klein, the inspiration for the "Records" series, and the creative process behind it. The screenings will be divided into three parts on the day: Part 1 from 12:00 to 14:00, Part 2 from 15:00 to 17:00, and Part 3 from 18:00 to 20:00. "The Man Who Became the Camera - Photographer Takuma Nakahira" will be screened in Part 1 on the 15th and Part 2 on the 16th, "Daido Moriyama Records | MOVIE IN LONDON" will be screened in Part 2 on the 15th and Part 1 on the 16th, and "TRACES OF A DIARY - Tracing a Diary" will be screened in Part 3 on both days.
In addition to the screening of "Daido Moriyama Records | MOVIE IN LONDON," there will also be a screening of an explanatory video by the curator of the Daido Moriyama exhibition "DAIDO TOKYO," which was held at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris from February to June this year, as well as an interview with Daido Moriyama.
