Kawaii culture recreated in Paris. Yu Kimura, Shojo no Tomo and others appear at Tokyo Crazy Kawaii Paris

Jul 2, 2013

Tokyo Crazy Kawaii Paris, a festival promoting Japanese "kawaii" culture to the world, will be held in Paris, France, from September 20th to 22nd. Yu Kimura, a reader model for Harajuku fashion magazines and a "Kawaii Ambassador" appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a pop culture envoy, has been appointed as the event's public relations and promotion director. In addition to promoting the event, she will host a workshop on the day and appear as a runway model in the fashion show. Shojono Tomo, the artist who designed the event's official mascot, will also be attending. She will exhibit her kimono-themed installation "KIMONO FUSION," which ran at a Swedish art museum from 2009 to 2011. Julie Watai, a photographer whose 2005 photo book "SAMURAI GIRL" sold 1.2 million copies and who also works as a talent under the name Amano Ai, will also be appearing. Additionally, four new brands will appear in the Harajuku area: "ACDC RAG," an apparel shop centered around Harajuku's Takeshita Street that offers a wide range of genres from pop to punk to dance; "AVANTGARD," a select shop specializing in legwear; "Angelic Pretty," which offers Lolita fashion; and "MiCHi MALL," which sells nail tips to overseas customers.

Tokyo Crazy Kawaii Paris is the first in a series of events aimed at promoting Japanese culture in lifestyles around the world. France is the world's second-largest comic book producer and home to Europe's largest anime and manga trade fair, Japan Expo. The event will showcase what Japanese people truly consider "cute" and "cool." To showcase the real Japan, Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara, and Ginza have been recreated at the venue. Each area will offer a unique blend of fashion, music, gourmet food, manga, anime, games, and characters, allowing visitors to experience a "2.5-dimensional" Tokyo.
