Profile of artist Takahashi Riko

Born in Saitama in 1977. She studied traditional dyeing and weaving at Tokyo University of the Arts, and while pursuing her doctorate, she was invited by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AFAA) to work in Paris. In 2006, she founded Hiro College Co., Ltd. (now Takahashi Miko Co., Ltd.). In 2008, she completed her doctoral program at Tokyo University of the Arts, receiving her PhD in Fine Arts. In 2019, her work was added to the permanent collection of London's Victoria and Albert Museum. In April 2021, she became a professor at Musashino Art University's Department of Industrial, Craft and Design. Her work is characterized by solid graphics using perfect circles and straight lines. In addition to artwork using kimonos as a medium, she creates a variety of products in collaboration with manufacturers and artisans across Japan under her original brand, HIROCOLEDGE.
Comment from Artist Takahashi Miko
Based on the theme of "infinite possibilities born from constraints," she continues to express herself using the minimal motifs of perfect circles and straight lines. The circle is a universal shape that transcends gender, generation, nationality, race, and all other boundaries. This collection features a graphic of multiple intertwined circles, evoking connections between people, circulation, regeneration, and infinite expansion, which is deployed across a variety of items. The jacket, with its linear silhouette reminiscent of a happi coat or yukata, is a distinctively Japanese piece born from our collaboration with Adidas, which shares the spirit of rational, waste-free Japanese manufacturing, including kimono. It has come to symbolize this collection, which transcends the boundaries of sportswear and can be enjoyed freely by anyone. We hope that through the minimalist yet universal worldview of this collection, expressed solely through circles, viewers will feel a sense of hope for a new society in which everyone can live with confidence while respecting each other, and a powerful force for moving forward into the future.
