Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico's leading modern painters, was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico. She died in 1954 at the age of 47. She was the third daughter of photographer Guillermo Kahlo. In 1925, she was involved in a bus accident, suffering serious injuries that left her with permanent disabilities. The accident caused her to become estranged from her boyfriend, and it is said that her loneliness led her to become absorbed in the art world. In 1928, she met painter Diego Rivera, and after being attracted to each other's work, they overcame their 21-year age difference and married the following year. Due to the aftereffects of Frida's accident and Rivera's affairs with other women, their marriage was not always smooth, a situation that continued to have a major impact on her work. In 1938, she held her first large-scale solo exhibition abroad, where her surrealist worldview received high praise. In the 1950s, her health worsened, and she was frequently hospitalized. Even after becoming bedridden, she continued to create, but she was no longer able to create works that utilized Frida's characteristically meticulous technique. She died in July 1954 from complications of pneumonia. Over the course of her life, she created over 200 works, most of them self-portraits. Many of them depicted her own romantic relationships. Singer Madonna, captivated by her striking work, even had a painting titled "My Birth" hanging in her living room. Rumor has it that she would not work with anyone who disliked the painting, which depicted Frida giving birth. Jean Paul Gaultier presented a Frida-themed collection for the Spring/Summer 1998 season. Models wore hairstyles that incorporated Frida's trademark traditional Mexican braids, and were given makeup with Frida's signature connected eyebrows and mustache. Motifs such as the dress, roses, crosses and skulls from the painting appear. It is said that the costume that Gaultier designed for Milla Jovovich in Luc Besson's film The Fifth Element was inspired by Frida's painting "La columna rota" (The Broken Spine). Julie Taymor's 2002 film, Frida, portraying Frida's turbulent life, stars Salma Hayek in the role.
