The season for wearing yukata, with fireworks displays, summer festivals, and more, is upon us. We spoke to Shiseido, Sonia Rykiel, and Paul & Joe for their tips on makeup for yukata days.
Shiseido suggests cool makeup for simple patterns and sweet makeup for vibrant, cute patterns. To avoid a dreary impression, pair a traditional yukata with blue eyeshadow to accentuate the outer corners of your eyes and create long, narrow eyes. Add color to your lips and cheeks as well. For cute patterns, use pink eyeshadow to create a flattering finish around the eyes, and add a blushed blush and lipstick, like after a bath, for a light and airy look. The key to base makeup is a natural, moderately radiant complexion.
In the humid, crowded, and humid atmosphere of festival venues, makeup smudging can be a concern. Sonia Rykiel advises that moisturizing with moisture is key in the skincare stage. The reason makeup comes off is because the skin's surface is left with only sebum, oil, and powder, and moisture acts as a regulator to prevent this. Furthermore, using waterproof eyebrow products and eyeliner can help keep your look resistant to sweat.
Paul & Joe also emphasizes skincare to prevent makeup from coming off. Gently patting on lotion tightens pores and controls sebum secretion. To finish your base makeup, use a moisturizing mist to enhance adhesion, and keep blotting paper in your drawstring bag so you can quickly remove sebum even when you're out and about.
In addition, various brands are currently holding a makeup advice event to match yukata on the 7th floor of Isetan Shinjuku until the 29th. Shiseido also offers lectures at beauty counters nationwide.
