Learn natural hair and makeup to modernize your dress in Cannes

May 30, 2013

Classic dresses, such as fit-and-flare and princess-line silhouettes, were prominent at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but the key word for hair and makeup was "natural."

For example, young actress Jennifer Lawrence, who appeared at the premiere of "Jimmy P.", and Carey Mulligan of "The Great Gatsby," wore long, flowing hair and red lip color.

Many women, including Emma Watson in "The Bling Ring," wore updos to match the atmosphere of their dresses, but casual styles such as braids were the norm. Watson also left some loose strands, creating a natural and healthy image. Even classic couture dresses were paired with smoky eye makeup and nude lip colors, creating a youthful and modern look. On the other hand, it was adult actresses like Nicole Kidman who highlighted their beauty with classic hairstyles. Jessica Chastain, who appeared at the premiere of "All Is Lost" in a couture dress by Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci, wore a somewhat old-fashioned ponytail that made the most of her loose, curly hair. At the screening of "Cleopatra," she sported classic wavy hair reminiscent of famous actresses of the past. Marion Cotillard, who appeared at the premiere of "Blood Ties," attracted attention with a 1960s-style beehive hairstyle to match her dress. The combination with this year's makeup, smoky eyes and nude-colored lip gloss, was fresh.
