A series of Andy Warhol art events are being held this summer

Jul 29, 2013

This summer, Andy Warhol's masterpiece "200 Campbell's Soup Cans" will be shown in Japan for the first time at the National Art Center, Tokyo's "American Pop Art" exhibition, and a number of art events featuring his work from the 1960s are being held across Tokyo.

Tabloid Gallery (2-6-24 Kaigan, Minato-ku, Tokyo) is hosting "Andy Warhol and Sunday B. Morning," an exhibition until August 4th showcasing Warhol's work, focusing on posters produced by the publisher "Sunday B. Morning," said to be the only copies Warhol himself approved of. Admission is free.

The exhibition features Sunday B. Morning's new works "Dollar Sign" and "I Love Your Kiss Forever," as well as prints of his signature works such as "Campbell's Soup Cans" and "Marilyn Monroe." While Warhol posters and reproductions are replicated worldwide, Sunday B. Morning is known for being the only work that is closest to Warhol's work, printed on the highest quality paper with the finest archival inks, and is recognized by Warhol himself as the only one to be recognized as such.

In addition, Gallery Target (2-32-10 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) will be hosting "WARHOLS - Early Editions & Printed Matters" from August 8th to 22nd, showcasing Warhol through the gallery collection and edition works (prints sold by publishers in limited runs). Admission is free.

The exhibition will highlight Warhol's transformation from a commercial artist to a pop artist, beginning with his first solo exhibition at Ferus gallery in Los Angeles in 1962. These works, which continue to influence many artists today, were all created in the 1960s, including his early motifs such as Campbell's Soup cans, Coke bottles, and comic book characters, as well as his "Death and Tragedy" series, which he began at the recommendation of curator Henry Geldzahler, and his signature portraits of Marilyn and Elvis.
