Andy Warhol's masterpieces arrive in Japan for the first time! "American Pop Art" exhibition opens in August

May 14, 2013

The much talked about "American Pop Art" exhibition will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo from August 7th to October 21st, marking the Japanese debut of Andy Warhol's masterpiece "200 Campbell's Soup Cans," also known as the "Mona Lisa" of pop art.

This exhibition will present, for the first time in the world, the entirety of one of the world's largest private collections of American pop art, owned by John and Kimiko Powers, known as the world's leading collectors of both Japanese and contemporary art. The exhibition features approximately 200 works, including Warhol's "200 Campbell's Soup Cans" and "Kimiko Powers," as well as masterpieces from the 1960s by Tom Wesselmann, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. These works tell the story of the Colorado-based couple, who recognized the true value of pop art even before it was established and supported it as patrons from its early days. The exhibition's official theme song was composed by internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara, and has been featured in television commercials since April.
